The public demand for CBD products has rapidly expanded over the last decade and has been a driving force to the robust growth of the overall CBD industry. However, due to a lack of FDA oversight, and as support for CBD continues to surge across the U.S. and worldwide, consumers are faced with market saturation. Worse, a growing number of non-reputable manufacturers have entered the industry due to a lack of regulation.

With options at an all-time high, combined with many impure and untested CBD products flooding the market, it is a challenging time for consumers to determine which products are worthwhile or even safe. Here, we will go over how to source a good-quality product, how we regulate the products we carry, popular terms, medication interactions, and side effects.

To achieve desired results, CBD consumers need the best CBD oil. Low-quality CBD products will not offer the same level of benefits as products from the best CBD manufacturers. Additionally, low-grade CBD sold by non-reputable brands may contain harmful contaminants or toxins. Owing to a lack of regulation and guidelines for CBD manufacturers, labels on CBD products can often be incorrect or false. Consumers purchasing these impure products are not only wasting money but may be exposing themselves to a host of potentially dangerous substances like impure additives, pesticides, or metals. So, never buy CBD products from any retailer or wholesaler that does not offer current testing. You need to make sure that they have current cannabinoid and terpene profiles as well as testing for any contaminants.

When looking at different retailers, a few terms can help you easily identify quality products. The terms - Full Spectrum, broad spectrum, Non-GMO, pesticide free, PGR or Plant Growth Regulator free, and lab tested - generally apply to higher-quality products. The minimum requirements we deal on are US-grown, Non-GMO hemp that is held to some organic standards and never grown with any pesticides or PGRs and always lab tested. Our goal is to offer the most organic and natural products possible. Most of our products are full or broad spectrum, which is key to achieving health benefits. Always make sure that your products are labeled correctly, and you know precisely how much CBD and additional cannabinoids are in each serving with lab work to match. Our products are

Medication Interactions

To be on the safe side, we always advise taking any internal CBD supplement 2 hours apart from ANY PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION. You need to understand that while the majority of the science indicates CBD is safe for use and consumption, it does pose a few risks that, if not properly understood, could be dangerous. Cannabidiol can inhibit the cytochrome P450 system’s ability to metabolize certain drugs, leading to an overall increase in processing times. Interestingly, CBD is not alone in its effect on drug metabolism; grapefruit, watercress, St. John’s Wort, and Goldenseal all have a similar impact in terms of CYP450 inhibition. When the CYP450 system is impacted in this way, it leads to higher or lower levels of certain drugs in your system at one time. Any drug CYP450 enzymes metabolize could potentially interact with cannabidiol. According to the Indiana University Department of Medicine, drugs known to use the CYP450 system include:

  • Steroids
  • HMG CoA reductase inhibitors
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Antihistamines
  • Prokinetics
  • HIV antivirals
  • Immune modulators
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Antibiotics
  • Anesthetics
  • Antipsychotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-epileptics
  • Beta-blockers
  • PPIs
  • NSAIDs
  • Angiotensin II blockers
  • Oral hypoglycemic agents
  • Sulfonylureas

This list does not include all of the potential medications impeded by cannabidiol nor will every medication in the categories contained on this list cause an interaction. For these reasons, you should consult with a medical professional before supplementing with CBD. If you are taking a medication affected by cannabidiol, you should consult your doctor to make sure that it is safe for you to supplement your personal care routine with CBD. From there, the two of you may consider adjusting the dosage of your medications so that you can use both products safely.

Side Effects

The reported side effects of cannabidiol range considerably online. While there are indeed studies showing the potential side effects, at Coastal Green Wellness, we believe that most of the reported side effects found online can be traced back to impure, mislabeled, or contaminated products. Also, with the vast range of concentrations on the market, consumers can unintentionally ingest large amounts of carrying agents. Usually, these carrying agents are oil-based and can upset stomachs. Picking a more concentrated product or splitting up doses usually relieves these side effects, and they are not related to CBD at all.

From our experience, the only side effect is light drowsiness which will generally subside after the first week or two of use. Furthermore, a study published online in 2017 found that “the most commonly reported side effects were tiredness, diarrhea, and changes of appetite/weight. In comparison with other drugs, used for the treatment of these medical conditions, CBD has a better side effect profile.” In conclusion, the side effects of CBD are minimal and less than comparable prescription drugs but always research and talk to your health care provider.
